July Recap & Hello August!

Miles today: evening workout to come
Miles in 2013: 641.06

August first! We survived July! What a month. Let's do a quick recap, shall we?

The month started out pretty amazing. July 4th? We do it well.

Strong 10 miler on the east coast followed by a weekend with great friends.

A new member of the family

And number of missed runs due to poor decision making in the footwear department.

New month, better decisions.

When I was little, I always hated August. No birthdays, no holidays, and back to school. As an adult I absolutely cherish August. The dog days of summer, Naples slows down, and football season is right around the corner. This year especially I have looked forward to August. In my mind, I really built up July and starting marathon training. Even though the first month, my mileage wasn't changing much, I put this weird pressure on myself to hit every workout and be under pace for every run. Well if you have been reading the past few weeks, you know where that got me. Sitting out while everyone enjoys long runs and early morning tempo workouts.

I have also been keeping a little secret from the internets world. For 4 weeks in July, I completely stopped drinking. Not a freaking drop. (I won't tell you how old I was the last time I was totally alcohol free for one month) I decided to go dry for a number of reasons, one of which was to see if it affected my running. (It really didn't) I was actually not sure if I could do it for a full month, nor if I really wanted to. Turns out, it really was not that big of a deal. Not drinking out on a Friday night was a little weird the first week, mostly because I didn't know what to do with my hands. (Think about that the next time you are at a bar. If you don't have a drink, what do people do with their hands?!) The times I really missed having a cocktail was afternoons with friends over having a drink or two in the sunshine. In the end, I did lose a few pounds, but not sure if that was even due to drinking or not. Really the only event of significance was the fact that I got a horrendous chest cold after not being sick for over a year and a half. Vodka has an immunoprotective effect. Lesson learned.

Anyhow, I am looking forward to day drinks and margaritas again in August. Saturday will be exactly 4 weeks and that is plenty for me. More importantly, some great things are happening this August. I am recovering and getting back into training. (Hopefully and God willing) My sister and niece and nephews are coming to visit. (I do not think it is possible for me to be any more excited to see them. Seriously, I have been counting down since they booked their flights) And finally, Larry and I are hanging in town all month with the new puppy. We spent so much of the beginning of the summer out of town, that I am really looking forward to spending lazy days with friends on the beach, paddle boarding, and beach cruising.

My only goal for August, other than to enjoy these summer days, is to stay uninjured and keep running. I have big plans for the fall and winter and those will all go bye-bye if I am hurt.

10 weeks and 2 days left to go!
